This bonded pair wants nothing more than sit by your side while you watch TV, snuggle with you in bed and to keep you company while you go about your day (although the occasional treat is also very welcome).
Pepper and Benny are sweet, affectionate and loyal. They were raised from puppyhood in a loving home. Unfortunately, over the last couple years, their elderly owner became ill and eventually passed away this summer.
Pepper is a gorgeous, five year-old, female, longhaired, redheaded dachshund with an outgoing and playful personality. Benny is a distinguished, ten year-old, shorthaired, tan and grey dachshund who is mellow, patient and alert.
An ideal home for these two would have one or more people who are at home all or most of the time. Pepper suffers from significant separation anxiety and has a very difficult time when she can’t be in the same room with her humans. Benny enjoys the company of his humans, but tends to be more independent than Pepper. Both are very social, gentle and love to play with children and other dogs. We have no information about how they interact with cats.
Both dogs are able to form a strong bond with their humans (given a reasonable adjustment period). Both need a moderate amount of exercise and would benefit from a fenced-in yard and/or walks at least three times a day. Benny is housebroken and will “go” outside when let out or walked regularly. Pepper appears to have been trained to use pee pads and to do her bigger “business” on the tiled bathroom floor. We are working with her on ”going” outside and have been about 70% successful, so far. Both are excellent watch dogs and they will let you know when someone approaches your property. They have been crate trained for sleeping at night. They do well at night, but would probably prefer to be snuggled up to their human(s) in a real bed. They will need additional training in order to take walks without pulling and barking. Both appear food motivated and trainable, but Pepper may take longer than Benny.
Pepper and Benny have had recent dental and other veterinary treatments funded by the rescue. Pepper has a clean bill of health and clean white teeth. Benny is healthy for his age, but has had a couple of procedures to improve his quality of life. He had 16 teeth extracted due to poor dental health. Now that he is pain-free, he is much happier and playful. He has no trouble eating soft food or dry food softened with a bit of water. He also had a couple growths removed from his chest. Even though these lumps were large, they turned out to be made of fat and did not show any signs of cancer. He does have one lump on his eyelid remaining that may require special surgery in the future. He also has what appears to be a benign fatty growth between his shoulder blades (currently not causing any difficulties). Overall, both are healthy, active and normal for their ages. They are spayed and neutered, up to date on their shots, microchipped, and do not display any aggressive behaviors or behaviors that would suggest prior abuse. Pepper is a chewer, but has limited her chewing to chew toys and an occasional piece of packing material.
